Coffee, Cake and Chat with Pastoral Care
St. Columba’s, Scarborough
Ernest completed Stepping Up at Easter 2022 and has been invited to be the Pastoral Care Co-ordinator at St Columba’s Church, Scarborough. Part of this role will involve sending cards out on behalf of the church, to people who are sick and unwell, and making regular contact by telephone. He also hopes to be able to go out in a church pair, to visit people in their homes. In these ways, he will be complementing the pastoral ministry already undertaken by other members of the church, who take holy communion to people at home, and send birthday cards to the congregation.
Ernest also attends Coffee, Cake and Chat, which happens every other Tuesday at St Columba’s. It was started two years ago by the churchwarden, Pauline, as people were emerging out of the Covid-19 pandemic. It provides a friendly space for people to gather and build new friendships. Over forty people enjoy the opportunity to make new friends over a cuppa and some cake. Most people who come are from the local community and it is their first contact with church. One or two have started to come to church services.
The café provides a wonderful pastoral opportunity for everyone, particularly Ernest. He is committed to this ministry, making time to be with people, listening and offering a warm welcome, and he says, “I have become more confident in meeting strangers.” He enjoys the coffee and cake too! Another development for Ernest in the last two years, has been a greater impetus to Bible reading, helped by their former vicar’s bible study group. He has found that this has nurtured his faith and confidence.
St Columba’s is about to welcome its new vicar, Elspeth, in July 2024, and Ernest says he feels very optimistic about future growth.
