Knit and Natter with Prayer

Christ Church, Eston, Middlesbrough

Elaine is a Community Minister at Christ Church Eston. She completed Stepping Up in December 2023 and has spent the past year developing a prayer space in Christ Church and has started a Knit and Natter group, which just keeps growing!

The Knit and Natter group is such a lovely mix of people, some from church and some from the local community. Everyone works together and everyone is willing to share their skills and to create gift items such as hats, scarves etc , to raise money for renovations in the church kitchen and hall. The novelty door stops, and tea cosies have proved very popular. A married couple who have joined the Knit and Natter group have knitted beautiful nativity characters and Elaine’s husband has made a fantastic stable. Elaine commented that the nativity scene is really eye catching, I’m so proud of it.

The prayer space has taken a bit longer, taking time to create a beautiful space in church where people can find some quiet. The vision is to create a special place to pray, reflect and spend time with God. There are prayer cards for every aspect of life and people are able to light a candle.

Elaine is using her love of knitting and crafts to reach out into the community and to create a place for prayer and reflection, to help people connect with God when they come into the church.

Elaine says:

“Stepping Up really changed me, the main thing was how many ways there are to listen to God. I would recommend everyone to join Stepping Up, it’s rewarding, challenging, enlightening it also helps you to grow spiritually. I met some  lovely people, and I know we will be friends forever. When I started Stepping Up I was more of a Martha than a Mary but now I have morphed into Mary, I have slowed down and I enjoy every day with Jesus.”
