This is Me, Come and See!
Emmanuel Church, Bridlington
Chrissy completed Stepping Up in 2022, and has been involved in developing ‘This Is Me,’ a group for adults with different abilities. Chrissy and Les have a daughter with a learning disability, Chrissy said:
“Once she reached the age of eighteen we found that there was no longer any social activities in Bridlington that she could attend. Along with some of the parents who also found this to be a worry, we thought it would be a good idea to start up our own club.”
Chrissy and Les approached Richard the vicar at Emmanuel Church who suggested that it would be a good idea if we did this as a church ministry, and so Jacqui Moore, a lay reader also came on board taking the role of Pastoral leader for the group.
This is Me meets on Monday evenings 6-7.30pm term time. It is a time to chill, have refreshments, enjoy being in each other’s company doing whatever they feel happy to do.
We have various activities, which include karaoke, Xbox games, snooker, arts and crafts and a variety of board games. We try to emphasise the club belongs to the members and they take the lead in whatever they would like to do, some may bring along things they like to do, e.g. we have someone who loves to bring his stamp collection to the group.
In the last 10 - 15 minutes of the session we share a ‘sprinkling of Jesus,’ encouraging our members to pray and say thank you for whatever has been good in their lives. We keep things simple to support their understanding of God and our faith. Everyone enjoys singing and signing the grace at the closing of the session.
This is Me is a ministry which started very small but like the Mustard Seed has grown, we now have 13 members and have been very pleased to welcome two more helpers onto the team. It is wonderful to see God at work and we wonder where he will lead us in the future. This is Me, come and see!
